Indonesia launches 5G spectrum auction
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has opened an auction for the use of 2.3 GHz radio frequency band in the range of 2,360-2,390 MHz. The auction is open exclusively to operators that already have a cellular mobile network operation license in Indonesia, local newspaper Indonesia Expat reports, citing Denny Setiawan, head of the Ministry’s spectrum buyer selection team. These frequencies will be used by mobile operators to provide 5G services on the local market.

Interested operators can already dubmit the required auction documents at the Secretariat of the 2.3 GHz Radio Frequency Band User Selection Team.

The 2.3 GHz frequency was initially occupied by three broadband wireless access (BWA) operators, namely First Media, Internux, and Jasnita Telekomindo. However, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology revoked the frequency licenses belonging to these BWA operators in December 2018 and decided not to renew the licenses, as well as to change the frequency use for cellular mobile services.

To boost the adoption of 5G services in Indonesia, the government is preparing three frequency options. The first is the lower band, which has two options – 700 MHz and 800 MHz. The 700 MHz frequency is currently still used for analogue TV broadcasts which are planned to be migrated to digital. To implement 5G using this frequency band, the Ministry is now waiting for the Broadcasting Law to be passed.

For the middle band, Indonesia initially had two frequency options, 2.6 GHz and 3.5 GHz. Both are currently used for satellite connections. In the upper band, Indonesia has a frequency of 26 GHz. This frequency is still empty and is expected to be soon used for provision of 5G services.
