Indosat Ooredoo expands 5G service to Surabaya

Indonesian operator Indosat Ooredoo has expanded its 5G services to Surabaya city. Indosat Ooredoo commercially launched its 5G service in Solo and Jakarta earlier this year. To coincide with the launch of 5G services in Surabaya, a new Nokia 5G Experience Center has been opened at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in partnership with Nokia, ITS, and the University of Oulu Finland.

The facility will provide education, development, and testing capabilities in the 5G field, help strengthen local digital talent, accelerate local 5G content and use case development, Indosat said.

5-IONE programme

This 5G Experience Center is designed to support the development of a 5G Ecosystem in Indonesia with the formation of 5-IONE (5G - Indonesia Institution of Innovation by ITS Indosat Oulu Nokia Ecosystem) Forum. The established 5-IONE Forum managed to create two pilot programs in East Java for the creation of 5G use cases with a blueprint for Smart City and Smart Corridor conceptualization and development for Surabaya City & Jember Regency.

The creation of the 5-IONE programme will provide youth and students with exposure to global research and development facilities and communities, offering certification programmes to become authorized by 5G experts, and providing channels for career development and entrepreneurship world-wide. Indosat Ooredoo also launched the IDCamp Mobile Application Research programme, to offer online coding training scholarships to ITS students to develop mobile applications that support the 5G use cases they developed at the 5G Experience Center.
