Inmarsat launches 2nd Global Xpress satellite

Inmarsat has successfully launched its second Global Xpress (GX) satellite on board the International Launch Services (ILS) Proton Breeze M rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on 1 February.

Deployment should be finished by the end of the month. There will then be an electrical orbit-raising phase to take the spacecraft to its final geostationary orbit. This is scheduled to complete by the end of March, ready for the start of payload testing at the beginning of April and full global coverage early in the second half.

Built by Boeing Satellite Systems International, I-5 F2 is part of a USD 1.6 billion investment by Inmarsat into Global Xpress, the next generation of global mobile broadband communications.

International Launch Services (ILS) has announced that its Proton Breeze M rocket, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on 16 May, crashed shortly after liftoff due to an unspecified "anomaly". Inmarsat-5 F2 deployed into geostationary orbit

Inmarsat-5 F2, the second Global Xpress (GX) satellite, successfully completed its orbital deployment stages on schedule. Ofcom warns Inmarsat, Solaris to use spectrum or lose it

UK communications regulator Ofcom has warned Inmarsat and Solaris Mobile to use their spectrum by December 2016 or risk losing it, reports ISPreview. Inmarsat supporting Solar Impulse 2 round-the-world flight

Satellite services provider Inmarsat has announced that it is helping to support the Solar Impulse 2 electrically-powered aircraft in its attempt to circumnavigate the world. Inmarsat FY profits rise on stable revenues

Satellite services provider Inmarsat reported revenues of USD 1.29 billion for 2014, up from USD 1.26 billion a year earlier. Its maritime segment grew by 13.5 percent to USD 596 million, with organic growth of 3.2 percent excluding acquisitions. Government revenues fell 21.7 percent to USD 320 million, enterprise revenue dropped 24.8 percent to USD 167 million, and aviation revenues were up 38 percent to USD 101 million. KDDI sells Inmarsat stake for GBP 183 mln

Japanese mobile operator KDDI has sold its entire 4.85 percent stake in satellite communications company Inmarsat for 840 pence per share, Reuters reports, citing a KDDI statement. KDDI will raise around GBP 183 million from the sale of its 21.74 million shares in Inmarsat. Nomura International was the bookrunner for the placing.
