Inwit and JMA launch first multi-operator mobile DAS site

Telecom Italia’s tower unit Infrastrutture Wireless Italiane (Inwit) and JMA Wireless have teamed up to deliver what they describe as the world’s first multi-band, multi-operator system providing connectivity in crowded areas on the basis of DAS (Distributed Antenna System) and XRan technologies.

The companies have recently trialled the system by providing voice and data services in coastal resorts throughout Italy at the ‘Jova Beach Party’ summer tour of Italian pop-star Lorenzo Jovanotti. Tens of thousands of spectators enjoyed full voice and data services, exploiting the improved connection to share countless videos and photos on social networks, said the partners.

Jovanotti’s seaside concerts were held at Barletta, Praia a Mare, Roccella Jonica and Policoro, with Inwit providing its own hardware for each operator and acting as neutral host. The DAS system serving the Jova Beach Party tour was set up in collaboration with JMA, Calzavara and Telebit, said TIM’s tower unit.

The system based on JMA’s TEKO DAS currently provides high-quality voice and data services via XRan technology, a virtual RAN that replaces traditional 4G hubs, and already prepared for 5G, added Inwit.
