Iran blocks 'dollar' SMS, forex website as rial weakens

Mobile phone text messages containing the word 'dollar' and the mesghal.ir exchange rate website were blocked on 10 January in Iran, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported. This follows a drastic fall in the value of the Iranian rial. The word 'euro' and currency symbols were transmitted freely, AFP said. AFP cited the ISNA news agency as saying MCI and Irancell asserted that they were not filtering the messages. The rial has lost more than a third of its value against the US dollar in the past three months, especially in the first few days of 2012 after the US government enacted a law targeting
