Italian govt appoints experts to report on network overhaul

Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta has announced the appointment of a trio of experts to write a report on investment requirements in the country’s ageing telecoms infrastructure. The three experts are telecoms industry veteran Francesco Caio, French economics professor Gerard Pogorel and Scott Marcus, former advisor to the US Federal Communications Commission. They have been tasked by Letta to deliver a report by the end of the year outlining the state of the network and investment targets that would have to be met by any owner of the network.

Speaking at a Financial Times seminar in Rome, Letta said that investment targets would have to be set to help the country become more competitive. The government later added that the public assessment was called in the light of commitments made by European leaders at the digital agenda summit held in Brussels in October, which reiterated the need to invest in new digital technologies and accelerate the deployment of high-speed broadband networks.
