Italian PM Renzi formally resigns

Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi has submitted his formal resignation to the country's president Sergio Mattarella three days after suffering a larger than expected defeat in a 04 December referendum on constitutional reform. Barely 40.9 percent of voters agreed with the outgoing prime minister's wish to reduce the powers of the upper house Senate and regional authorities, with 59.1 percent voting 'No' in the referendum, according to the final count.
