Italian PM Renzi to resign after referendum defeat

Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi said he would keep a promise to resign after suffering a larger than expected defeat in a 04 December referendum on constitutional reform. Barely 40.9 percent of voters agreed with the prime minister's wish to reduce the powers of the upper house Senate and regional authorities, with 59.1 percent voting 'No' in the referendum, according to the final count. "I take full responsibility for the defeat," said Renzi, who has announced a number of key reforms during his two and a half years in office, including an emblematic Jobs Act back in 2014 and large-scale
