Italian 'smartphone tax' increase approved by state council

The triennial update of the "equo compenso" (fair compensation) decree, which significantly increases the amounts levied on smartphones, tablets and other hi-tech consumer devices in Italy, has been deemed legitimate by the country's state council. Italian culture minister Dario Franceschini first announced the increase in June, confirming that the money raised would be distributed to copyright owners as compensation for personal copies of digital files.
