Italy probing Apple and Samsung over planned obsolence

Italian antitrust watchdog AGCM has announced the launch of two separate investigations into accusations of planned obsolescence of devices by Apple and Samsung. In a statement, the antitrust body said it would look into whether the smartphone makers are deliberately applying software updates to "reduce the performance of their products over time and encourage consumers to buy new versions thereof". The agency accused the companies of failing to proved sufficient information on the effects of the updates on the phones, in breach of the country's consumer code.
