Italy's Agcom proposes merger with data protection authority

Merging Italy's communications watchdog Agcom and data protection authority Garante Privacy would mark an important step in the process of building a regulated market for the use of data, according to Agcom commissioner Antonio Nicita. In a speech given at a conference organised by University of Naples Federico II, the commissioner said merging the two entities would allow them to "exert greater 'contractual' power and moral suasion over global platforms".
