Italy's freeze on Vivendi's Mediaset stake unlawful, says EU court advocate

Thursday 19 December 2019 | 14:45 CET | News
An Italian law requiring Vivendi to freeze two-thirds of its stake in broadcaster Mediaset infringes EU rules, according to the EU Court of Justice's advocate general. In his opinion, Manuel Campos Sanchez-Bordona said national legislation could "in principle" prevent ownership being too concentrated but said such laws must be also be "proportionate to the objective of protecting information pluralism", adding that Vivendi was not "effectively in a position to exert a considerable influence" on Mediaset.
