Italy's Open Fiber calls on EU to switch off copper networks by 2025

The European Union should set a date of 2025 for the switch-off of ageing copper networks throughout the continent with a view to accelerating the adoption of fibre-optic technology, according to the CEO of Italian wholesale operator Open Fiber. "It would be in the interest of consumers and of Europe, and would serve to support the leap to the new technology," said Elisabetta Ripa in an interview with La Repubblica, likening such a move to the transition from analogue to digital terrestrial television. She added that the EU itself has already targeted reaching 1Gbps download/upload speeds
