Japan to introduce fibre network maintenance fees for internet users in 2024 - report

Japan's Communications Ministry will introduce a system in which internet users across the country will be charged a small fee. Proceeds from this fee will be used to maintain the fibre infrastructure needed for provision of 5G services, the Nikkei Asian Review reports. The initiative would support the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' plans to make high-speed internet connections available everywhere in the country, including in the most rural communities.
