Judge finds Dish AutoHop falls under fair use

Dish Network's AutoHop service, which lets subscribers watch recorded TV programmes without ads, doesn't infringe Fox Broadcasting's copyrights, a federal judge said. The contested features of Dish's Hopper digital-video recorder, which also includes the ability to automatically record all four major networks' prime-time programming every night, would be fair use under the US Supreme Court's 1984 decision in the Sony Betamax case, US District Judge Dolly Gee said at a hearing in Los Angeles, reported by Bloomberg. Dish has argued that its Hopper is no different from Betamax, which the Supreme
