Kansas City chosen to host Google Fiber network

Kansas City is the winner of the Google Fiber contest, where the internet company will build a trial fibre network offering speeds of 1Gbps. Google announced the project over a year ago and received applications from nearly 1,100 cities interested in hosting the network. The company has now signed a development agreement with the Kansas City local government and plans to work with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop gigabit applications for the network. Pending approval from the city's Board of Commissioners, Google plans to launch the service beginning in 2012. The company said it will also look at ways to expand the service to other cities.
