KDDI's mobile base surpasses 40 mln in February
NTT Docomo reported 267,900 net adds in February to bring its mobile subscriber base to 62.59 million in total. Softbank followed closely with 266,000 net adds, ending the month with 35.28 million customers, figures from Japan's Telecommunications Carriers Association show. KDDI gained 220,500 new customers to bring its mobile subscriber total to 40.03 million.

KDDI launches new flat-rate plans for mobile services

Japanese operator KDDI has launched new flat-rate plans to boost mobile Arpu, The Chicago Tribune reports. KDDI 's new monthly plan for smartphone users includes a voice service at JPY 2,700. KDDI's Arpu in the mobile segment currently reaches JPY 4,150 per month, down from JPY 5,800 five years ago. Rival operators NTT DoCoMo and Softbank recently launched similar flat-rate plans.

KDDI plans further dividend increase after strong FY results

KDDI pledged a further increase in results in the year to March 2015, after strong growth in the past year, helped by its takeover of cable operator J:Com. It also plans to raise its dividend by 23 percent in the current fiscal year, to JPY 160 per share. In the year to March 2014, the Japanese operator grew revenue 18 percent to JPY 4.33 trillion, and operating profit was up 29 percent to JPY 663 billion. Free cash flow grew more than four-fold to JPY 226 billion, and the dividend was increased 44 percent,

Softbank leads in net adds in March

Softbank led in net adds in March as the operator gained 649,500 new customers in the month, bringing its total to 35.92 million. NTT Docomo followed with 515,500 new mobile subscribers, ending March with 63.11 million customers, figures from the Telecommunications Carriers Association show. KDDI reported net adds of 494,600 and a total mobile base of 40.52 million.

KDDI picks Cleversafe to support au Cloud service

Object-based storage provider Cleversafe has been tapped by Japanese communications carrier KDDI to power the latter's au Cloud service. The KDDI au Cloud service, launched in 2012, is a subscription based secure storage service for smartphone customers. To ensure continuous data availability and support the need to expand to accommodate growing storage demands, KDDI picked Cleversafe's Information Dispersal technology.

KDDI's Smart Pass base hits 10 million

Japanese mobile services provider KDDI has seen its Smart Pass base grow to 10 million. The service, launched on 1 March 2012, provides unlimited download access to a number of popular apps, discount coupons, backup services, and enhanced security and support, for JPY 372 per month (plus tax).

Japanese mobile operator Softbank gained 249,900 net new subscribers during January, to bring its total to 35.01 million. KDDI followed with net adds of 189,900, ending the month with 39.81 million mobile customers. NTT Docomo attracted 140,200 new customers, to bring its total to 62.32 million.
