Softbank leads in net additions in January
Japanese mobile operator Softbank gained 249,900 net new subscribers during January, to bring its total to 35.01 million. KDDI followed with net adds of 189,900, ending the month with 39.81 million mobile customers. NTT Docomo attracted 140,200 new customers, to bring its total to 62.32 million.

SoftBank readies bond issue of JPY 300 bln - report

Japanese  operator SoftBank is preparing to issue a bond for a total JPY 300 billion to Japanese retail investors, Reuters reports citing sources familiar with the matter. According to the report, the final decision on the issue is expected for 1 May. The obtained funds will be used to repay loans for US mobile operator Sprint, which was acquired by SoftBank in 2013.

KDDI's mobile base surpasses 40 mln in February

NTT Docomo reported 267,900 net adds in February to bring its mobile subscriber base to 62.59 million in total. Softbank followed closely with 266,000 net adds, ending the month with 35.28 million customers, figures from Japan's Telecommunications Carriers Association show. KDDI gained 220,500 new customers to bring its mobile subscriber total to 40.03 million.

Docomo field tests active antenna system

Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo has field tested an active antenna system for mobile networks in which a 4 dB reduction in electrical loss compared to conventional antennas was demonstrated. The active antenna system for the field test was developed by Tokyo-based Nihon Dengyo Kosaku. By demonstrating the active antenna system's capability to expand a base station's range of coverage, the field test points to the potential for more extensive mobile service in rural areas and faster recovery when rebuild

NTT East, Navitime offer free Wi-Fi hotspot search

NTT East and navigation content provider Navitime Japan have launched a free Wi-Fi hotspot search feature for the English-language Navitime app. Coinciding with the launch, NTT East will offer two week's usage of its Wi-Fi service through the app, as well as detailed information about hotspots where the service can be used. The app offers information about each hotspot as well as an augmented reality mode function to show the distance and direction from the user's current location to the hotspot. App usage

Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo gained 279,100 net new subscribers during December 2013, to bring its total to 62.18 million. Softbank followed with net adds of 224,300, ending the year with 34.76 million mobile customers. KDDI attracted 222,600 new customers, to bring its total to 39.62 million.
