Docomo leads in December net adds
Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo gained 279,100 net new subscribers during December 2013, to bring its total to 62.18 million. Softbank followed with net adds of 224,300, ending the year with 34.76 million mobile customers. KDDI attracted 222,600 new customers, to bring its total to 39.62 million.

Japanese communications provider Softbank posted a net profit of JPY 93.3 billion for its fiscal third quarter to December, down slightly from JPY 94.23 billion due to losses at its US operator Sprint. EBITDA improved to JPY 483.7 billion from JPY 286.3 billion, and revenues nearly doubled, to JPY 1.963 trillion from JPY 842.3 billion. Japanese mobile operator Softbank gained 249,900 net new subscribers during January, to bring its total to 35.01 million. KDDI followed with net adds of 189,900, ending the month with 39.81 million mobile customers. NTT Docomo attracted 140,200 new customers, to bring its total to 62.32 million.

Docomo accelerates customer growth, results still lower

NTT Docomo posted a small drop in results for the first nine months of its fiscal year, but reiterated its forecast for growth over the full year, as it maintains its focus on selling more smartphones and associated services. Japanese communications provider KDDI saw its nine-month net income increase 49 percent to JPY 268.7 billion from KRW 180.2 billion a year earlier. SoftBank to launch fixed-rate voice plan

Japanese communications provider SoftBank plans to launch a fixed-rate voice plan for smartphone users in April. The plan will be priced at JPY 6,980 per month and combines fixed-rate voice services with its fixed-rate data plan. During November, Japanese mobile services provider SoftBank reported 237,100 net adds to bring its total mobile base to 34.54 million. KDDI gained 190,200 new customers to end November with 39.39 million mobile subscribers, and NTT Docomo signed-up 93,400 new subscribers to bring its base to 61.90 million.

Apple's share of smartphone sales hits 76% in Japan

In November, Apple iPhones made up three of every four smartphones sold in Japan. The iPhones made up 76 percent of smartphone sales last month after NTT Docomo also started selling the devices, Bloomberg writes citing research by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Docomo to launch daily international mobile data service

Japanese mobile services provider NTT Docomo will launch a 24-hour flat-rate data communications billing plan for customers traveling overseas. The service will be available starting with 2 December. Dubbed 'Global 1 day Pake', the service will be available for JPY 980, JPY 1,280, or JPY 1,580, depending on the country or region of use.
