Kenyan government to spend KES 1 bln on mobile phone software and hardware start-ups

Wednesday 24 October 2018 | 11:29 CET | News
The Kenyan government has set aside KES 1 billion to help local start-ups in the country's mobile phone software and hardware segments to grow, reports the Citizen News. ICT minister Joe Mucheru told an annual meeting of industry players that he is concerned over imports of 50 million telephone handsets every two years and wondered why Kenya cannot use the skills available locally to manufacture phones that are suitable for the local markets. Mucheru said the government expects to work with firms that seek to participate in manufacturing and assembling phones, in order to reduce their costs.
