Korea's ICT minister warns operators over subsidies
South Korea's ICT minister Choi Mun-kee warned the mobile operators of stronger actions over subsidies, Yonhap reports. Choi said that telecommunications services are a basic human right and the operators have a responsibility to provide stable services at reasonable prices. If the operators do not stop paying out the subsidies, the government will take action, he warned. SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have been penalised for offering excessive subsidies before, but have yet to abandon the practice.

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) has reached an agreement with South Korea's three mobile network operators on a shutdown of customer registration systems. Korean communications provider SK Telecom will compensate the customers who were affected by a six-hour network outage on 20 March. Three South Korean mobile operators SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus, will establish a joint team to curb excessive subsidies which have earned the companies the ire of the government, Yonhap reports. South Korean telecommunications provider LG Uplus gained 7,567 new broadband customers in February to end the month with a total of 2.95 million broadband subscribers. The company also had 4.72 million telephony customers, comprising 4.20 million VoIP customers (up by 33,717) and 521,429 PSTN subscribers (up by 4,136). LG U+ also ended February with 1.63 million IPTV subscribers after adding 36,439 new customers in the month.

South Korean telecommunications carrier KT again lost internet subscribers in February. The company ended the month with 8.03 million broadband subscribers after shedding 9,000 customers. KT's telephony base was lower by 68,000 subscribers, to total 17.87 million with the PSTN base falling by 61,000 to 14.39 million and the VoIP base slipping by 7,000 to 3.48 million. However, the KT gained 59,000 IPTV subscribers to bring its total to 5.08 million in February.
