KPN, VodafoneZiggo improve content distribution standard with other parties

Tuesday 12 February 2019 | 16:00 CET | News

Dutch-based broadcasters and distributors have agreed on a new TV standard, a common technical specification for programme signaling. The innovation comes under a 'frame-accurate programme-related' metadata to improve content distribution. The standard was designed by the Programming Programming Working Group (Event Triggering Workgroup). The working group is an initiative of Media Perspectives, a platform for media and innovation. Eight media and distribution companies have a place in the working group, namely RTL Netherlands, Talpa Network, Fox Networks Group, NPO, KPN, Liberty Global, VodafoneZiggo and TVT Media.

The new specifications provide benefits on multiple sides. For example, TV viewers can move forward and rewind more accurately, while providers can keep their EPG better up-to-date. The main gain for providers and broadcasters is the chance to further personalise advertising. With the new standard, for example, it is possible to better target certain groups.

The standard was announced in November 2018, but was completed at the beginning of this month.
