LatAm operators commit to launch RCS-based messaging

Thursday 7 December 2017 | 14:34 CET | News

Google has announced that four of Latin America’s leading operators have committed to launching Rich Communication Services (RCS) services across the region via its Jibe cloud hub. America Movil, AT&T Mexico, Telefonica and Oi are rolling out RCS in the countries where they operate, eventually bringing advancing messaging capabilities to more than two-thirds of mobile subscribers in Latin America. Customers will also be able also to send cross-network RCS messages to Jibe-connected users in countries outside of Latin America, said Google, adding that the features will be made available to existing users through an Android Messages update.

The company added that RCS gives users access to a number of advanced texting tools such as the ability to create rich group chats, see typing indicators, read receipts and share high-res photos and videos

Earlier this week, Google reached an agreement with Swedish group Telia to launch RCS across its markets in the Nordic and Baltic regions, and in Eurasia.
