Lithuanian regulator clears higher roaming rates

Lithuanian national telecommunications regulator RRT has taken the decision to enable mobile operators Bite Lithuania, Tele2 Lithuania and Telia Lithuania to apply higher roaming rates than the EU roming rates to be applied from 15 June. The new roaming rates will be introduced across the EU after regulation adopted by the European Parliament and European Council. After mid-June, mobile service rates will be equal to those on home networks.

The Lithuanian regulation will enable operators to apply higher rates in those cases when retail rates don’t cover expenses on roaming services. Three major Lithuanian mobile operators had applied to the regulator on the issue.

The watchdog has cleared the operators to apply additional payments not exceeding amounts needed to compensate additional expenses. RRT has based its decision on the need to protect mobile rates applied in Lithuania, which are among the lowest across the EU. The ceiling for the additional payment for calls when roaming will total EUR 0.014 per minute; the cap for the payment for roaming data services will be EUR 4 per GB.
