Loon deploys balloon-based LTE within 48 hours of Peruvian earthquake

Thursday 30 May 2019 | 15:15 CET | News
Alphabet's Project Loon said it provided LTE connectivity via atmospheric balloons just 48 hours after a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck northern Peru on 26 May. After requests from the government of Peru and Telefonica, Loon quickly re-directed a group of balloons to the impacted area in and around the remote Amazonian locality of Lagunas. The first balloons arrived on 28 May and began serving LTE to users below, providing SMS, text, email, and basic internet, said Loon CEO Alastair Westgarth in a blog post.
