Luxembourg postpones 26 GHz spectrum award on lack of interest
The government of Luxembourg has decided to reschedule the planned award of 26 GHz spectrum for 5G use, after reviewing the feedback gathered from the consultation carried out during the fourth quarter of 2020. The communication and media ministry received views from nine stakeholders and concluded that there is interest in principle in the medium term, but no immediate demand for 26 GHz frequencies.

The Benelux countries have agreed to work together to coordinate seamless 5G network coverage across their borders. The recommendation for technical cooperation was signed by the Belgian foreign minister, Sophie Wilmes, who also serves as president of the Benelux Council of Ministers.

Luxembourg announces second call for 5G projects

Luxembourg's ministry for Communications and Media has published details of a call for proposals on projects linked to 5G, indicating three broad areas of interest ('5G showcase', 'Science communication', 'Innovative conference coverage'). This second call for projects follows the similar initiative launched in mid-2019, which focused on 5G and complementary areas, such as IoT and smart cities.

Post Luxembourg telecom arm reports 3.4% growth in FY revenues

Luxembourg's incumbent Post said that its telecom and ICT operations (Post Telecom and Post Technologies) generated revenues of EUR 479.7 million in 2020, representing an annual growth rate of 3.4 percent. In a year marked by the pandemic, the operator said that its fixed voice segment saw stable revenues compared with 2019, after many years of structural decline. Lockdown restrictions, however, hurt the mobile business, with a multi-million negative impact across out-of-bundle and roaming revenues.

Luxembourg's mobile revenue decline eases to 2% in H2

Growth in Luxembourg's mobile revenues remained in negative territory in the six months to December, but the year-on-year drop eased to 2.2 percent according to national regulator ILR. This compares with the 9 percent fall suffered in the first half of the year, when roaming was particularly hit by the pandemic crisis. Overall, the mobile segment generated EUR 136.0 million in H2, compared to EUR 131.5 million in the previous six months.

Luxembourg regulator keeps LLU charge ceilings unchanged

Luxembourg regulatory authority ILR has published a decision on the monthly rental payable by alternative operators for a fully unbundled access line. The price ceiling is set at EUR 8.60/month starting from 01 April, stable from 2020. Similarly, the sub-loop unbundling charge has remained unchanged at EUR 5.44/month.

Proximus extends 5G partnerships with Nokia and Ericsson to Luxembourg

Proximus has signed a seven-year 5G RAN agreement with Nokia for its Luxembourg operations, after the equipment supplier recently secured a similar deal from Proximus in Belgium. Similarly, the company has extended the core network contract announced with Ericsson in October to cover Luxembourg, under which the Swedish vendor will supply its dual-mode 5G Core products.

Orange Luxembourg's 5G network goes live in and around capital city

Orange Luxembourg has announced the launch of its 5G network, saying that the first locations to see the arrival of the new service will be within the country's capital and surrounding areas, such as Kirchberg airport, Bertrange and Strassen. The operator has confirmed that its existing customers can start benefiting from 5G at no extra cost as roll-out progresses, while new sign-ups will be able to choose a 5G-ready mobile plan with subscriptions ranging from EUR 10 to EUR 59 per month.

Luxembourg regulator seeks stakeholders' view on 26 GHz band

Luxembourg regulator ILR has launched a public consultation on the future use of millimetre wave spectrum in the 24.25-27.5 GHz range, which has been identified as one of the three 5G pioneer bands within the EU. Interested stakeholders have been invited to express their interest, specifying how they would use the resources available and estimating the amount of spectrum required to meet their needs.

Post Luxembourg has started offering the '5G Power' plans unveiled last week, when the operator announced a partnership with cloud gaming specialist Blacknut.
