Madrid and Gipuzkoa to be assigned new prefixes

The Spanish provinces of Madrid and Gipuzkoa could be assigned new fixed line prefixes in the medium term due to the saturation of the previous format, according to a report by telecom regulator CNMC. The watchdog has asked the country's secretary of state for telecommunications and the information society (SETSI) to consider the possibility of assigning the new prefix 81 (plus a seven-digit number) or 919 (plus a six-digit number) in Madrid, where the current prefix of 91 is 97 percent occupied. In the northern province of Gipuzkoa, the prefix 843 may be used in the medium term to complement
