Maltese operator Melita has announced plans to begin providing gigabit broadband services in Italy via its Melita Italia subsidiary starting in April. The company’s Italian unit will be headed by former Telecom Italia and Tiscali CEO Riccardo Ruggiero and will use the FTTH network of wholesale-only operator Open Fiber to provide services in Catania, Palermo, Milan and Naples before expanding to more than 30 cities and 3,000 sales points by the end of 2021. Melita added that around 100 new jobs will be created as a result, the majority in the south of the country.
In a statement, Melita promised innovation in terms of both customer care and product. It said customers in Italy will be able to access the services bundle it rolled out last year in partnership with Plume Design consisting of adaptive Wi-Fi, guest access, advanced parental controls, the Plume app and SuperPods that fit into electrical wall outlets to spread the internet from end-users' modems to all areas of the home.
