Masmovil leads Spanish mobile, broadband growth in May, Vodafone loses customers

Spain added another 148,000 FTTH subscribers in May, taking the country to a total of 9.265 million fibre broadband customers, according to the latest data from the CNMC. The total broadband market grew by just 27,000 lines in the Month to 14.974 million connections, as the growth in fibre was offset by a continued decline in DSL customers. Masmovil was the main winner on the broadband market, with net additions of 41,500, and also led net gains on the mobile market.

In the past year, Spain has added 1.8 million FTTH subscribers, while DSL customers declined by 1.3 million over the same period. Movistar still dominates the fibre market, accounting for 44 percent of subscribers.

However, the incumbent added less than 1,000 net new broadband customers in Spain in May, while the other two big operators, Vodafone and Orange, lost broadband customers in the month. Movistar had just under 40 percent of the total broadband market at the end of May, followed by Orange with 26.5 percent of connections, Vodafone with 21.3 percent and Masmovil with 7.9 percent.

Vodafone was the main loser, the same as in the broadband market, with a drop of 59,000 mobile connections.
