Spain's Ministry of Economy has published its latest annual report on broadband coverage in the country. This shows that access to at least 100 Mbps improved by 5 percent points in the year to June 2018, to 81 percent of the population, while 85 percent have access to at least 30 Mbps. The government aims to increase these rates to respectively 89 percent and 98 percent by 2020 with the help of its ongoing subsidy programmes.
The report covers both fixed and mobile networks. For mobile, 4G coverage has reached 99.5 percent of the population. For fixed, the government claims Spain has built the most extensive FTTH network in Europe, with more than 43 million homes passed. That's equal to 77.4 percent of premises, up six percent points from 2017.
In terms of region, Madrid and the Basque region have the highest access to at least 100 Mbps broadband, at respectively 97.1 and 94.3 percent coverage. Access is lowest in Extremadura and Galicia, at 55.6 and 61.5 percent, and government subsidies target especially these areas.
