MediaTek, Inmarsat establish first 5G NB-IoT satellite connection

Thursday 20 August 2020 | 09:37 CET | News
Chipmaker MediaTek and satellite operator Inmarsat announced what they describe as the world's first connection of a narrowband NB-IoT standard chipset with a satellite located 35,000 kilometers above the earth. In a statement, the partners said the successful field trial established a bi-directional link from MediaTek's satellite-enabled standard NB-IoT device in a base station developed by Taiwan's Institute for Information Industry located at Fucino Space Centre in northern Italy to Inmarsat's 'Alphasat' Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellite.
