MediaTek unveils 5G SoC, to be in first smartphones by Q1 2020

MediaTek has unveiled at Computex its first multi-mode 5G chipset, designed to power the first wave of high-end 5G smartphones. The 7nm SoC uses the MediaTek Helio M70 5G modem, Arm's new Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU, and MediaTek's most advanced AI processing unit to meet the power and performance demands of 5G.

The chipset is for 5G standalone and non-standalone operation on sub-6GHz networks. It supports connectivity from 2G to 4G to bridge existing network access while 5G networks roll out globally.

The new chipset will be ready for lead customer samples in Q3 and be in commercial devices by Q1 2020, MediaTek said. Full specifications of the SoC will be introduced in the coming months.

Features include speeds up to 4.7 Gbps download and 2.5 Gbps upload, intelligent power savings and comprehensive power management, advanced AI applications such as imaging de-blur, 4K video encode/decode at 60fps and super high resolution cameras (80MP).
