MediaTek set to ship first 5G chip from Q1 2020

MediaTek is expected to unveil its first 5G chip on 26 November at the MediaTek Summit. GSM Arena said the company called an event for that date to present the 5G modem, putting MediaTek on track to sell its first 5G chip from Q1 2020

The MT6885Z chip is expected to be produced on 7nm silicon and include Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 CPUs, an AI processing engine and camera support of up to 80 MP and 4K 60fps video recording. According to the report, the chip is already in mass production and should start shipping to manufacturers in Q1 2020.

GSM Arena reported that MediaTek is also working on a more affordable 5G modem for mid-range phones of around USD 300. That one will likely be called the MT6873 and should use Cortex-A76 cores and the same 7nm FinFET process. Production is expected to start no sooner than the second quarter of 2020.
