Russian mobile operator Megafon, in cooperation with Nokia and the radio R&D institute NIIR, has completed tests of cognitive radio in the Moscow region, reports Vedomosti. Cognitive radio technology LSA will enable operators and vendors to use frequencies resource more efficiently and simplify spectrum management. The network management system will send signals to base stations and end-user devices, correcting their work.

The system itself will receive information of restrictions in band use from the geo-locational LSA data base. Megafon plans to introduce LSA technology on its network only. Fellow mobile operator Vimpelcom, working under the Beeline brand, is more interested in LAA (Licence Assisted Access) technology, enabling the use of WLAN bands.
