Megafon eyes Yota acquisition
Russian mobile operator Megafon is considering acquiring Yota, reports Vedomosti citing Igor Tavrin, the CEO of Megafon. The acquisition would give Megafon additional spectrum to deploy LTE across the country. Megafon and Yota already share the same controlling shareholder, the Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, with the two companies both part of the Garsdale holding company. Megafon already uses the Yota network as a MVNO to offer LTE services. Yota runs LTE networks in 29 regions and holds 60 MHz in the 2,500-2,700 MHz band across the country.

Megafon cleared to acquire Yota

Russian federal competition regulator FAS has cleared Megafon's proposed acquisition of LTE operator Scartel and the company Yota, reports Tass-Telecom. Both Megafon and Scartel are already controlled by Garsdale holding. To secure approval for the merger of the operators, Scartel agreed to concessions aimed at ensuring competition on the wireless broadband market.

Russian competition regulator drops investigation into Yota

Russian federal anti-monopoly regulator FAS has stopped its investigation into LTE operator Yota, reports Itar-Tass. The investigation was launched in March after Yota was suspected of discriminating against other operators in the field for access to its LTE network. The regulator has not found any violation of the law on competition. The investigation was initiated after a complaint from national operator Rostelecom. Russian mobile operator Megafon provides LTE MVNO services over the Yota network.

Russian state-owned corporation Rostekh (Russian Technologies) has dropped plans to sell its stake in the Garsdale holding company, reports Vedomosti citing Sergey Chemezov, the CEO at Rostekh. Rostekh had earlier announced plans to sell the stake, considered a non-core activity. Rostekh owns 4.5 percent stake in Garsdale, which in turn owns 50 percent plus 100 shares in the mobile operator Megafon and 100 percent of the LTE operator Yota. The company USM Holdings controlled by Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov is considering acquiring TeliaSonera's stake in Russian mobile operator Megafon, USM CEO Ivan Streshinsky told Bloomberg. The investigation follows a complaint from the national operator Rostelecom. Russian mobile operators eye LTE using Scartel network

Russian mobile operators MTS, Megafon and Beeline are negotiating the establishment of a joint venture with Yota Networks based on Scartel's network, reports Vedomosti. Yota to open its LTE network for other operators

Russian operator Scartel, working under the Yota brand, plans to upgrade the software of its LTE network in order to raise the number of operators able to connect to it, Vedomosti reported. Yota, Megafon complete merger

Russian operators Megafon and Yota have completed their merger into a single holding company, reports Tass-Telecom. The holding company Garsdale, combining 100 percent of the shares in Yota and an over 50 percent stake in Megafon, was set up. The operators will continue their operations independently. AF Telecom owns 82 percent in Garsdale, and the remaining 18 percent is held by Teleconet Capital and Russian Technologies, pro rata for their stakes in Yota.
