Megafon to buy Yota for USD 1.2 billion
MegaFon has agreed to buy LTE operator Scartel, which operates as Yota, from its majority owner Garsdale at an equity value of USD 1.18 billion. Scartel has nationwide LTE spectrum consisting of 2x30 MHz in the 2.5-2.6 GHz band. Its LTE network already covers 27 percent of the population and has more than 648,000 subscribers. 

Garsdale also controls MegaFon, and the mobile operator already acts as a MVNO on the Scartel network. Garsdale, which is ultimately controlled by Alisher Usmanov, has 50 percent plus 100 shares in Megafon, while TeliaSonera has a 25.2 percent stake. The latter said it plans to support the takeover at the special shareholders meeting in September to approve the deal. 

Megafon said it expects significant synergies from the takeover, allowing it to strengthen its data network, accelerate the roll-out and lower the cost of 4G deployment. It will also take on up to USD 600 million in debt from Yota.

Russian mobile operator Megafon saw its third-quarter revenues grow by 9 percent year-on-year to RUB 77.543 billion, driven by strong growth in data services and equipment sales. Russian mobile operator Megafon has completed the acquisition of Scartel, the LTE operator controlling Yota, for USD 1.18 billion plus debt. Megafon to maintain Yota brand after merger

Russian mobile operator Megafon plans to build a single LTE network after the acquisition of the LTE operator Scartel, reports Prime citing Mikhail Dubin, the managing director for retail business development at Megafon. Russian competition regulator drops investigation into Yota

Russian federal anti-monopoly regulator FAS has stopped its investigation into LTE operator Yota, reports Itar-Tass. The investigation was launched in March after Yota was suspected of discriminating against other operators in the field for access to its LTE network. Russian federal competition regulator FAS has initiated an investigation into the activities of the LTE operator Yota, reports Vedomosti. The investigation follows a complaint from the national operator Rostelecom. Yota, which is controlled by the mobile operator Megafon, is suspected of discriminating in wholesale access to its LTE network. Rostelecom has already lost several court rulings attempting to gain access to the Yota network, after it failed to reach a commercial agreement with the operator.

Russian mobile operators MTS, Megafon and Beeline are negotiating the establishment of a joint venture with Yota Networks based on Scartel's network, reports Vedomosti.
