Merkel calls for European rivals to US giants Google, Apple

German chancellor Angela Merkel has called for the creation of European rivals to US digital giants, Germany's manager-magazin.de reported online. At a CDU party rally in Worms ahead of the European elections, she said just as Airbus developed to become a genuine competitor to Boeing, one should not stand by and watch Samsung alone become a rival to Google and Apple. One reason to do so was to enforce German and European standards of data protection, she added.
