Mexico's Supreme Court suspends biometric data registry

Wednesday 16 June 2021 | 13:57 CET | News
Mexico's Supreme Court has granted a request by telecommunications regulator IFT to suspend a controversial new law that requires operators to collect user biometric data. Under the law, which passed in April, operators need to gather fingerprint or eye data from customers for inclusion in the 'Panaut' database to be managed by the IFT. The government said the aim is to cut crimes by making it more difficult for individuals to remain anonymous when they acquire new mobile phones and SIM cards.
