Microsoft is expanding its Office software on rival mobile platforms and adding new functionality. Users of Office on iPads, iPhones and the upcoming Office for Android tablet software will now be able to create and edit documents, rather than just read them, using the free apps, without taking an Office 365 subscription.
Microsoft first launched Office for the iPad in March and said it has since had over 40 million downloads. Since then, it's released native apps for OneNote, Lync, Yammer, OneDrive for Business and OWA for iOS and Android. It's now releasing a preview of Office for Android tablets, as well as adding Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps for iPhone and updates for the iPad apps. The touch features of the mobile apps will also be extended to Office software for the upcoming Windows 10 OS.
