Microsoft shuts down Salo product development unit

Microsoft said it has decided to shut down its product development unit in Salo after concluding negotiations with staff, the Helsinki Times reported, citing a stock exchange release. Staff cuts to be implemented at other units will be detailed at a later date. The staff cuts are a consequence of weaker-than-expected demand for handsets running Windows Phone. Microsoft previously announced it will reduce 7,800 positions in its mobile phone operations worldwide and up to 2,300 jobs in Finland, including about 1,000 in Salo.
