Microsoft unveils Windows Mixed Reality headset from Samsung

Microsoft announced at an event held in San Francisco a new Windows Mixed Reality headset, the expansion of its VR team with the acquisition of VR social network AltSpaceVR, and the addition of the SteamVR catalog to Windows Mixed Reality this holiday. The company is also collaborating with Intel to bring new Windows Mixed Reality experiences and content to the mainstream. The companies are working together to deliver a Windows Mixed Reality experience with Intel True VR for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Intel said it's committed to bring mixed reality experiences to life, including the recent launch of the 8th Gen Intel Core processor.

At the event held in San Francisco, Microsoft presented the Samsung HMD Odyssey, which joins the family of Windows Mixed Reality headsets. The company earlier introduced a similar headset from Asus.

The newly acquired AltspaceVR brings people together in virtual reality from over 160 countries to attend meetups, comedy shows, yoga classes, dance parties, and large-scale events hosted by NBC, Reggie Watts, Justin Roiland, Drew Carey and more. With the AltspaceVR team onboard, Microsoft said it looks forward to building the world’s preeminent mixed reality community.

Microsoft also said developers will be provided access to the Windows Mixed Reality SteamVR preview so they can try out their experiences. This holiday, consumers will get access to this preview. In August, the company said it's working with Valve to run SteamVR content on Windows Mixed Reality immersive headsets.

Also on 17 October, Halo fans will be able to get their first glimpse of what mixed reality and Halo can feel like. All Windows Mixed Reality headsets coming this holiday are now available for pre-order.
