Asus has presented its first product based on Microsoft's Windows Mixed Reality platform, offering customers a mixture of virtual and augmented reality experiences with the headset linked to their Windows computer.
The Asus headset comes with two built-in front-facing tracking cameras with six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) position tracking. The device doesn’t need external sensors or additional software, making the initial setup simple, the company said. It weighs just under 400g.
At Ifa in Berlin, Microsoft also announced that HP, Lenovo, Dell and Acer would launch headsets based on its 'mixed reality' platform. Using the same software as Microsoft's own Hololens, the new devices promise a "more affordable" experience and simpler set-up than other VR headsets on the market.
Headset and motion controller bundles will start as low as USD 399 and will be compatible with existing and new PC models starting at USD 499, Microsoft said. It also announced two new classes of computer to use with VR headsets: Windows Mixed Reality PCs with integrated graphics and support for 60 fps and Windows Mixed Reality Ultra PCs with discrete graphics and 90 fps.
