Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8
Microsoft has given a preview of its new mobile operating system Windows Phone 8. Smartphones running the software are expected to launch this autumn. Some of the new features of the OS, which is modeled on Windows 8 for PCs and tablets, include: support for multi-core processors, higher screen resolutions of 1280x768 and 1280x720 supporting 720p HD, the addition of microSD cards for extra storage, NFC wireless sharing, Internet Explorer 10 and a new digital wallet to store payment cards, coupons, boarding passes and other important info through Sim pairing. Windows Phone 8 will also integrate maps from Nokia.

For app developers, Windows Phone adds the possibility of in-app payments for virtual goods, multitasking to allow apps to run in the background, and integrated VoIP. The latter allows VoIP apps where internet calls can be answered like traditional phone calls, using the same calling interface as the cell phone. The Windows Phone 8 SDK and developer tools will be available later this summer.

Microsoft is also doubling the number of languages supported on Windows Phone 8 to 50. In addition, the apps Marketplace will nearly triple its footprint, to over 180 countries.

Business users will also see new features. Windows Phone 8 will include built-in technology to encrypt the entire device, including the operating system and data files, as well as support for the United Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) secure boot protocol and features to better protect the device from malware. IT departments will also be able to manage apps and phones remotely, with tools similar to Windows PCs.  A 'Company Hub' will also support businesses building customized employee and internal process apps.

HTC was one of the first manufacturers to announce its backing for the new platform and said it plans to launch Windows Phone 8 smartphones later this year. Huawei confirmed it will offer a Windows 8 phone its its Ascend range, and Nokia and Samsung are also expected to adopt the new software.

Due to the extensive changes to the OS, existing Windows Phone 7 devices will not be upgraded to the new software. However, Microsoft plans a partial update called Windows Phone 7.8 that will give existing users some of the new start screen features. This includes customisation options such as a new palette of theme colours and three sizes of Live Tiles.
