Mobile City Nigeria opens Lagos shop and plans own handset brand

Mobile City Nigeria has opened a retail store in Lagos for mobile phones, laptop computers, notebooks, iPads and other electronic devices and accessories, with plans to spread to other parts of Lagos and beyond, ThisDay reported. Chairman Stanley Ejirika Afunwa said the Mobile City has partnered with brands like Samsung, Huawei, Apple and Tecno. He said Mobile City would soon launch its own mobile phone brand, which is still at the manufacturing stage and would be launched in Nigeria and other parts of the world where Mobile City has a presence.

Africa smartphone market grows almost 2% in Q3

Africa's mobile phone shipments declined 6.0 percent year on year in Q3, as a drop in feature phones offset growth in the smartphone segment, IDC said. Its research shows that feature phone shipments declined 11.2 percent to 29.4 million, while smartphone shipments were up 1.6 percent year-on-year to 22.9 million units.

Konga runs special offers for Samsung products

E-commerce firm Konga is running a special offer for Samsung smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy A71, Galaxy A01 and Galaxy S9+, among others. Konga is also running promotions for a variety of Samsung consumer electronics products. Smile Nigeria offers Mediatek smartphone with VoLTE functionality

Smile Nigeria has introduced an first entry-level, dual-SIM, Voice Over LTE-enabled (SmileVoLTE) smartphone, which is Google-approved and manufactured in partnership with Mediatek. It comes ready-loaded with applications such as the SmileVoice App, WhatsApp, Twitter, Skype, Instagram, YouTube, music and FM radio. It also has fingerprint and face recognition for security.

Xiaomi launches Redmi 9 smartphones in Nigeria

Xiaomi has priced the Redmi 9 starting at NGN 66,900 for the 4GB RAM +64GB RAM variant. The phone comes in the colours Grey, Green and Purple. The Redmi 9C starts at NGN 46,900 for the base variant with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage and costs NGN 53,900 for the 3GB RAM variant with 64GB storage. The Xiaomi Redmi 9A is priced at NGN 41, 900.

Glo offers 6 months' data in Smartphone Festival

Globacom says subscribers who purchase mobile phones from any Gloworld outlet will obtain bundled data with their device during the Glo Smartphone Festival. The company said customers who purchase handsets during the festival will receive a bundle of between 500 MB per month and 2 GB per month for six months, depending on the model they choose.

Nigerian Q1 feature phone shipments drop 13%, smartphones fall 14%

Nigeria's feature phone market suffered a 12.5 percent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) decline in shipments in Q1, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). Smartphone shipments in Nigeria declined 13.6 percent over the same period, with demand for both types of devices hit by cautious market sentiment in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

KaiOS says most Nigerians do not exploit full potential of mobile internet, regard it as status symbol

The majority of Nigerians fueling the growth of mobile internet and devices underuse the technology as they lack knowledge of the tools and features, says a study by KaiOS Technologies. The study says that while 82 percent of respondents claimed to have experience of using an internet-enabled phone as a way to boost their social status, only 32 percent mentioned surfing the internet or using instant messaging apps as one of their top three phone uses.
