More unlicensed spectrum needed to meet Wi-Fi demand - study

Wi-Fi networks around the world will need access to significantly more mid-band spectrum than is currently available in the 5 GHz range to meet expected growth in Wi-Fi data traffic, according to a new report by the Wi-Fi Alliance. The 'Wi-Fi Spectrum Needs' study predicts that the number of Wi-Fi devices in use around the world will grow from the current figure of 8 billion to nearly 12 billion by 2020. By that time, the ever growing number and diversity of Wi-Fi devices along with increased connection speeds and data traffic volumes will exceed the capacity of spectrum currently available
