MTN Nigeria owed NGN 10 bln in interconnect fees

MTN Nigeria is owed NGN 10 billion in interconnect fees dating back to 2002 by private telephone operators, Nigeria Telecommunications (Nitel) and its mobile subsidiary Mtel, the Daily Trust reported. The newspaper said a top official of MTN who did not want to be named said that Nitel/Mtel owed NGN 5 billion. He said that several operators have failed to pay on time, in breach of a contractual and regulatory provisions. He said the interconnect exchange operators licenced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2004 to reduce the debts has failed to make any meaningful impact.
