MTN uses OpenRAN to deploy more than 200 rural sites in Africa

MTN has announced the deployment of over 200 commercial rural sites throughout its operations using OpenRAN. MTN expects to instal more than 5,000 sites in rural areas throughout its 21 operations, bringing 2G, 3G and 4G connectivity to areas that were previously unconnected. MTN will use a network of partners to build and maintain through a full turn-key approach.

MTN operations in Uganda and Guinea Conakry are already benefiting from OpenRAN as MTN has partnered with companies such as Vanu, Parallel Wireless and NuRAN Wireless for delivery.

Rob Shuter, MTN group president and CEO, said its engineers had concluded Open RAN field trials in Zambia in 2018 and deploying commercial sites from the beginning of 2019. It deploys RAN alongside the traditional equipment in order to accelerate rural expansion.

NuRAN signs deal for 150 sites with MTN in Namibia for rural 4G and 2G

NuRAN Wireless said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with MTN Namibia for the deployment of rural and suburban sites under the network-as-a-service model in Namibia. They intend to install a minimum of 150 such sites there in the next 24 months, subject to concluding a definitive agreement with a ten-year term within six months of signing the MoU.  The agreement concern the NuRAN Revenue Share NAAS model.

MTN picks suppliers for OpenRAN roll-out in Africa

MTN Group says it is using its footprint across Africa to test and ultimately deploy OpenRAN. OpenRAN allows for disaggregation of the hardware and software elements of a network, enabling operators to use components with the same specifications and scale from a diverse base of vendors. MTN aims to roll this out by the end of 2021 in collaboration with Altiostar, Mavenir, Parallel Wireless, Tech Mahindra and Voyage, after MTN first used open source technology in 2019 to improve rural coverage.

MTN Zambia starts ZMK 180 mln network upgrade

MTN Zambia has begun its 'Project Summer' ZMK 180 million upgrade to boost network capacity and enable high-speed data services at 337 3G and 4G (LTE) network sites. MTN South Africa ties up with Ericsson as it plans to relaunch mobile money

MTN South Africa is making "good progress" in its plans to relaunch mobile money services, TechCentral reported citing group CEO Rob Shuter. It plans to deploy a "converged wallet platform" from Ericsson and is developing a system for on-boarding customers using a "know-your-customer" (KYC) platform. The operator said in November 2018 that it intended to relaunch its Mobile Money platform in South Africa in the first half of 2019, nearly three years after it and rival Vodacom withdrew the financial service
