NBTC to issue 3G licences before end-December
Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) plans to award the 2.1 GHz licences this month. The announcement follows a ruling by the Central Administrative Court to reject a petition from the Ombudsman for a review of the 3G spectrum auction in October. The Ombudsman claims there was a lack of free and fair competition in the auction and asked the court to issue an injuction to stop the issue of the licences. Settapong Malisuwan, chairman of the NBTC's telecom committee said the committee will convene shortly to study the court's ruling and then proceed to issue the licences before the end of the month, The Nation writes. The auction was held on 16 October with AIS, DTAC, and True winning 3G spectrum. However, the result was criticised for fetching less money than expected and alleged collusion among the bidders.
