NetBlocks, Internet Society activate tool to track cost of internet shutdowns

Two non-profit groups have teamed up to launch a tool designed to measure the economic impact of intentional internet shutdowns the world over. The Cost of Shutdown Tool (COST) activated by civil society group NetBlocks and the Internet Society calculates the real-time cost of internet shutdowns, mobile data blackouts and social media restrictions, including throttling. "COST will allows us to communicate to governments and technology companies on how much revenue they're losing when they disrupt the internet," said the partners, adding that the ultimate aim is to make governments think twice
