Netflix app base shows little impact from arrival of Disney, Apple on Dutch market

The arrival of Apple and Disney on the Dutch SVoD market in the last quarter of 2019 has yet to have a significant impact on other players, according to research by Telecompaper. SVoD market leader Netflix and local players Videoland, RTL XL and Pathe Thuis saw little impact on their installed base during the period, the latest Dutch Apps Market report shows.

The new services appear to be more an addition than a substitution of existing services. In their first quarter on the market, the Disney+ and Apple TV+ apps were installed on respectively 10 percent and 8 percent of Dutch smartphones. Netflix meanwhile grew to a penetration of 41 percent of smartphones, compared to 35 percent at the end of 2018.

The report shows that video apps tend to achieve a higher penetration on tablets than smartphones, due likely to their larger screens, making tablets more suitable for video viewing. This was also true for the Apple and Disney subscription services, which reached respectively 13 percent and 18 percent of Dutch tablets in Q4. It should be noted that Apple TV+ comes already installed on all Apple devices since its launch, although most consumers only report apps they have installed themselves.
